I should mention that within hours of the piece begin published, we received several unsolicited e-mails from people who had been there and had a significantly different memory of the screening.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] I'll let you readers draw their own conclusions. We expect embellishment, we condone narrative condensation and we celebrate character-driven points of view. And he was just a different person. Armed with a gun that fires Kryptonite needles, Bloodsport nearly succeeded in his mission to eliminate the Man of Steel, but ultimately failed. He was considered "unstoppable" at that time. There had been a few other plays dealing with the military and Vietnam at the time, but they weren't written by those who had actually been there. So he re-cut the fights, Michael restructured the movie and when we saw the next cut (which was quite a while later), the movie really worked. That it would be helpful and therapeutic.Blake Harris: And was it? And in that way it works, I can see that. With any film that's based on a true story, there are always questions and curiosities about authenticity. Today on Variant, we give you the comic book. But Michael Dudikoff is like 6'2," and the problem was they wanted to film in Asia. Which was Mike's move. He didn't like it. Absolutely. Later on, after Sheldon and I got to talking, I gave it to Sheldon and we reshaped it.Blake Harris: And at what point did the script become called Bloodsport. And on it, they didn't even spell my name correctly. In fact, that was the script for Stallone that Jean-Claude gave me some dialogue help with.Blake Harris: Ah, right after Bloodsport. And we did. That's what really happened. I'll tell you one thing: When I was there, I got a standing ovation. Menahem had also seen the little 16mm movie [Firefight] I directed and was going to give me my first directing deal.Blake Harris: For you to direct a Lone Wolf McQuade sequel starring Leon Isaac Kennedy and Chuck Norris?Sheldon Lettich: Yes, except that Chuck didn't want to do it. And I remember Mark telling us, "Menahem is thinking of casting this guy Gene Claude Van Damme. Thndrcougarfalcnbird. If they'd actually served. I was a gentleman. In exchange for dropping the suit, they offered me the rights to The Corsican Brothers, which I readily agreed to because, by then, Jean-Claude was trying to get a project set up with Moshe Diamant. Please note as always his opinions, recollections and claims are his own, and not necessarily fact. When I was growing up, you couldn't even find "martial arts" in the encyclopedia. The concept of gladiatorial games has its roots in the Etruscans, the predecessors of the Romans. But then Menahem decided he didn't want to make the movie.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: In his words, I'm quoting, "Jean-Claude can't even play one character, how do you expect him to play two?" And it was no-holds-barred, it'd very brutal and bloody, so it was called "Bloodsport." And he was an idol of Jean-Claude's too.Blake Harris: Yeah? KUMITE! And Stallone felt the same way. I remember us going back to his apartment and the thing was entirely full.Blake Harris: Did Menahem change his tune about Jean-Claude?Sheldon Lettich: Well, yes and no. How else could you get a hold of this? "But Sly," I said, "it really wouldn't work that way because one thing that's been established with Rambo is that he's the baddest motherf***er in the world, but he doesn't want to fight. None of that is reported. Idc, even have a "Thor and Cap trade weapons moment" in Endgame with those two. I buy you dinner tonight." I made a joke and it just took him out of it, snapped him out of it.Blake Harris: Laughter is the best medicine, right?Frank Dux: I took him out of it. And not only did More beat Lee, but he actually let him score one. He's demonstrating how to do a 1-inch punch and a 1-finger push-up. During my intelligence career, I have met with and been introduced to many covert operatives, whose existence has often been officially denied by the government agencies that these parties have been associated with. (w/ Nicole Byer) 4/7/2023 More HDTGM all-star Nicole Byer (Grand Crew, Nailed It!) So he still didn't' have a lot of faith in Jean-Claude's acting abilities and decided not to make it. We do it your way. The official budget's $1.2 million but I was told that we did that filmbelow the linefor under half a million bucks. He remembered that there were different shots. Do you recognize the guy all the way on the right? No, never. And the receipt was dated 1982, okay? That this guy looks just like me and we should suggest it to Mark DiSalle. I walked over there and he threw a playful kick at my head. I mean, the guy announced his malice. He went in and redid it. It's a sprawling ecosystem. I told Menahem that the new cut of Bloodsport was great and I thought it was going to do really well. The Jean-Claude I knew was a person who you wanted to see win. Okay? But here's a photo from the screening, so I guess at least one person wanted to have their photo taken with me. And I could see he was really contemplating it. This regular featureis written byBlake J. Harris, who you might know as the writer ofthe bookConsole Wars, soon to be a motion pictureproduced bySeth RogenandEvan Goldberg. Then all of the sudden I got hit in the face with a Black Dragon shirt, and that's how I became the youngest Black Dragon in the history of the Black Dragons.Blake Harris: That's unbelievable. So any time you want to know who an agent is you can just go down there and file a request? This is like 1979 and he wanted to put together some kind of theatrical piece about Vietnam veterans. I was going to say something like, "By the way, there's actually someone here who worked on the movie and he can maybe answer some of your questions" and he was going to come out and everyone would have went f***ing crazy. Jean-Claude is poison!! I wasn't going through anything like that myself, but it's therapeutic if you're able to recreate something that was an important part of your life and find a way to transmit it to other people. We had a nice conversation and promised each other to meet up when he was back in LA. In Enter the Ninja, I didn't use my real name. And then Hollywood got to him and he started showing signs of manic depression, you know?Blake Harris: In what way?Frank Dux: I'll never forget. If he had to be the bad guy and killed by the protagonist. Jean-Claude was doing movies for Columbia and they wanted him to bring them some ideas for movies and we brought that idea to them. Mind you, he's alleging: You're gonna tell me a receipt floated around from 1980 to 1988? He couldn't say anything. They were both pregnant at the same time. Mark was against it first, but I said, "Look, I can do a lot with this guy. I thought it was Pasadena, but everyone's told me it was Long Beach. ).Blake Harris: That's great. Bloodsport wasn't an Oscar-worthy film in any manner (the original cut was deemed unwatchable and a re-edit was completed before release), but Van Damme's stoic charisma and the memorable. Very well known. They were doing a showing of Bloodsport in a theater in my old home town and I just happened to be visiting. So I have all these memories of falling down stairs and crawling on my knees. So Grant's dad, he basically saw that I was struggling to make money so our family could eat and I could buy myself shoes. And at one of these construction sites, there was a guy doing martial arts. So I just started calling it Bloodsport, and that was useful because this type of fighting, it had a different name depending on where you were. I wasn't an actor, but I was a writer, so I got in touch with John and we hit it off. Roger Moore co-starred along side Van Damme in The Quest (1996) ironically playing a James Bond actor which Frank Dux had said inspired him to learn martial arts in the first place. "Blake Harris: [laughter]Sheldon Lettich: I tried to make my case. Plus, we hear LL Cool J's hip-hop prayer and the best . And so we climbed back over the wall and onto the set. Sheldon tells everybody that I told him a story of how I fought these events and he thought that would make a great movie and all this kind of stuff. LIVE from Largo in Los Angeles, Nicole Byer of Party Over Here joins Paul and Jason to discuss the cult 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme martial-arts film Bloodsport. There's an authenticity to it.Blake Harris: Speaking of authenticity, I was wondering how much of the movie is accurate to your own life experiences?Frank Dux: Well the fighting scenes were very accurate. Viking Samurai 104K subscribers Subscribe 546 16K views 1 year ago How did the Bloodsport Redux trailer go viral and Why this movie needs to get made! While trying to gain access into. Unlike so many of the testosterone-fueled films of the '80s, Bloodsport holds the rare distinction of being based on a true story. Early on, Johnson describes him as "a bright but undistinguished young man who, using cleverness and chutzpah, recreated himself as a super-hero a decade ago, painstakingly authenticating his new persona with military medals, trophies and newspaper clippings of questionable origins. And they weren't returning phone calls. "Blake Harris: That's great. I don't think Stallone has ever been given his due by movie critics. "Well, can I show you what I've learned since you taught me?" But the fights in the story were all real. And I just want to end it right now." But I didn't sleep with a reporter beforehand and I certainly didn't break into my instructor's house and steal a sword. So Frank put me on the phone with Jean-Claude and that was the first time I ever spoke to him. And so, you know, it was just a nice fit. By their own photographer. I had them cut down so it would fit him because I'm a bigger guy. Sometimes we get answers to questions like these, and other times we do not. During that time, I gave Jean-Claude some odd jobs. Why don't you go check it out?" Like, for example, about your teacher?Frank Dux: They try to make it sound like I made up my instructor. They were supposed to present the supposed evidence that said things didn't exist. And at this point in time I don't think it's going to happen.Blake Harris: Ah, too bad. KUMITE! In the end, his psyche was broken when Jimmy Olsen brought his brother onto the scene. People would just assume that this is how it worked on those other two movies.Blake Harris: That makes sense.Sheldon Lettich: So I actually suggested to Jean-Claude that he use Frank Dux to write the script. If he doesn't have any use for people, he throws them to the side. I thought that was real interesting.Blake Harris: I imagine that at 11 years old that was a pretty inspiring experience.Frank Dux: Yeah and then three years later, I saw him again. And he was friendly to me. I think Jean-Claude and I have done just fine without 'riding his coattails,' haven't we?". So I was curious why you think you were so skilled? And the two of them wrote this first draft. You can listen to theBloodsportedition of the HDTGM podcasthere. And he did that to Sheldon several times. Especially when it comes to the military. So I watched that happen and then I watched Victor Moore fight Chuck Norris.Blake Harris: Moore fought Bruce Lee and then Chuck Norris? Fights don't go down like that." How involved were you with that reshaping?Frank Dux: Every day, when Sheldon was writing the script, I would be in the office with him and Mark DiSalle, the producer. I actually sent for and had custom uniforms made. Oh man, he f***ing hated that movie. I was at this taping and I even got to ask a question, so this is probably my favorite episode by default. And so he told Menahem, "Sell it to me and I'll release it theatrically." This is the kind of bond we had. One of the key sequences in the film finds Task Force X sent to free Rick Flag from an enemy camp. And I said, "Jean-Claude, that's bullshit. In fact, we all went out to celebrate. And we never had a fight from that point on. I also remember seeing something on Mayberry R.F.D. He taught at the Nakano spy school in Japan. Ian Fleming based his characters on real people. Because he's riding on the coattails of Jean-Claude. Apparently, Stallone had read the same article and he was thinking exactly the same thing. And then he was inspired to write a script. Actually, I should back up. You know what I mean? I was just at his house for New Year's Eve. As far as, like, the choreography for how fights go and stuff. I remember him saying, "Michael Dudikoff is a movie star! That's just how funny memory can cloud things. It's a tale so amazing that two months after the film's release, it was dismissed by the L.A. Times as nothing but a fabricated "macho fantasy." And so how did you swivel from that experience into something in the film world?Sheldon Lettich: This will sound like it's coming completely out of left field, but the first time I actually got paid to write a script was a horror film that involved voodoo.Blake Harris: Yeah, I think that qualifies as "left field" status.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] What happened was I had met [Blaxploitation star] Leon Isaac Kennedy, who wanted to option a script of mine. Yet with Bloodsport, this was not the case. That's water off my back. I imagine that would be hard for you to prove, no?Frank Dux: Well, that part about me saying that the military ordered my record sabotaged? So the play was groundbreaking in some ways. But back then it sounded really cool.Blake Harris: Well you started that clich!Sheldon Lettich: [laughter] Back then, to say "based on a true story" was something that intrigued, and I think it particularly intrigued Menahem Golan. And that's pretty much what Double Impact isBlake Harris: I read online that you might be writing a sequel to Double Impact? People don't really know that about Lee, but he had one leg shorter than the other. During that time, he's never felt like he had a platform to defuse those lies and tell his side of the storyuntil now. And everybody had their picture taken with me, and I don't recall anyone having their picture taken with Sheldon, outside of his friends. You gotta admire the fact that he wanted to get a real Vietnam vet working on the script with him. Though defeated, this wasn't the last the heroes of the DC Universe saw of Bloodsport. Or, better yet, where does that phrase come from?Frank Dux: Oh, that's easy. Everywhere else in my life I'm like a duck out of water, but put me in that arena and I just swim. 4. He was totally against any kind of steroids. So when he heard that there was another movie with Van Dammeand this time Van Damme was starring in itSammy was totally enthusiastic. Bloodsport is the name of several supervillains appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. All of these versions exist in DC's main shared universe, known as the DC Universe.. A number of ideas were thrown out. There's a birth certificate and a death certificate for him. So we pitched him Legionnaire, gave him the treatment and Ed went for it.Blake Harris: You mentioned that Columbia passed on Legionnaire because it didn't "stick with the Van Damme formula." You know, Jean-Claude was totally overwhelmed when he got to work with Stallone on Expendables 2. I don't really want to give this guy a platform for more publicity because that's what he's always looking for.". It was "Dukes." But Vic explained it to me. The government did not know how much he knew about other covert operations, he said, so they placed information in his file to destroy his credibility. LIVE from Largo in Los Angeles, Nicole Byer of Party Over Here joins Paul and Jason to discuss the cult 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme martial-arts film Bloodsport. 5 years ago. These targets included the planned mining of a Nicaraguan port and the planned sabotage of certain Nicaraguan installations including power stations and weapons depots, codenamed OPERATION CORDOBA HARBOR. But what's interesting is that after the fight, I see Norris signing a program for Moore. He liked the authenticity in it and he'd heard about Tracers also. Ed Boon and John Tobias, the creators of legendary video game Mortal Kombat, were inspired in part by Bloodsport. So you have to get everyone on the same page and agree to make this movie. And just a few more questions. I thought Bloodsport was going to ruin my career when it was first cut and put together. That's just point of the absurdity of the whole thing.Blake Harris: And, when you were there, how did the reporter respond to all this?Frank Dux: I embarrassed the hell out of him. And I was right: He came with [Bloodsport actor] Michel Qissi and two other guys. I never said that. Bloodsport is a 1988 American martial arts film directed by Newt Arnold, and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Donald Gibb, Leah Ayres, and Bolo Yeung. KUMITE! Okay, okay, you made your point. I told Jean-Claude I might be getting the rights back to Corsican Brothers so he got Moshe on board. U.S. soldier Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) has come to Hong Kong to be accepted into the Kumite, a highly secret and extremely violent martial-arts competition. Jean-Claude's character comes to the US to help out his brother, not with anything like revenge or violence on his mind. You wanted to help him be successful. In the DC Extended Universe, Robert DuBois is played by Idris Elba in the . Because believe it or not, Robert DuBois truly was the man known for shooting the Man of Steel with a bullet in DC canon. And they did. After directing Jean-Claude in Double Impact [1991] and Lionheart [1990] before that, was there any reason you didn't want to be involved with writing or directing?Sheldon Lettich: That was right after another movie I did called Only the Strong [1993] and I seemed to have a lot of other things going on. Originally he'd planned for it to take place in present day, but I just thought that if you've got all of these fighters coming from all of the world like they did in Bloodsportand basically he was just trying to do a different version of Bloodsportthat it would make things more interesting if, for example, this took place in the 1920s because then it becomes really difficult for all these fighters from different parts of the world to journey to this contest.Blake Harris: So Frank was originally hired to write the script for The Quest?Sheldon Lettich: Frank, and they actually put another writer on with Frank. Then we needed someone different to play the Chuck Norris role. Jean-Claude?Frank Dux: When we started? We pitched it to them and they were kind of interested, but at the end of the day they decided not to do it. So cool, in fact, that now we have a professional basketball team called The Raptors and no one raised an eyebrow about why a team from Tornoto, Canada would be named that. It took me years to understand the producer's point, but I do now. It was a no-budget. And was that something that you and Jean-Claude consciously tried to deliver (or to avoid)?Sheldon Lettich: We tried to do something atypical with Lionheart. In fact, Universal had some problems with what we did there because we did not want it to be a revenge movie. And for three months prior to filming, Jean-Claude would come to my studio after I finished classes, he would show up at like 9 o'clock and I would train him in movie fighting.Blake Harris: How skilled was he? The truth. And I said, "Okay, Sheldon, you get the credits, and then when you get up to the next level, you just bring me up." What follows is the rest of our conversation Blake Harris: Given that you were mentioned several times in my interview with Frank, I can't help but start off by asking how surprised and/or frustrated you were to see the things he said?Sheldon Lettich: Frustrated? You're craaaaaaazy." They could shut me out from sequel rights. And we ended up settling. Hit the Subscribe button to track updates in Player FM, or paste the feed URL into other podcast apps. On this episode of Matinee Monday, Paul Scheer looks back at the "How Did This Get Made?" episode with Nicole Byer on the 1988 cult f. So I wrote the script and gave it to a guy named Jacov Bresler. JCVD RE-EDITED THE MOVIE HIMSELF TO GET IT . It developed a strong cult following, and has been cited as an influence on the development of mixed martial arts. But when I got done with him he was doing front flips, he was doing great.Blake Harris: And what about his personality? So I suggested a version where Rambo tells Trautman, "Sorry, Colonel, I fought my war. But if we can cut it down, I think we can sell this novel. By this time we knew that Frank was full of baloney with a lot of the stuff that he was saying about his life. And at the Invitationals, there's Bruce Lee. So he goes there on his own to rescue Troutman, and that pretty much became the movie.Blake Harris: That's a good point. Sheldon Lettich: Yeah. Can you tell me about writing Enter The Ninja? Or any agent's records? Actor & comedian Paul Scheer and film critic Amy Nicholson want your advice as they make the ultimate list of the greatest movies . And if somebody tells me they were in Vietnam, and in the Marine Corps, I'll believe them. The red one, the blue one, the black one. He frickin' landed on his head, in front of all my students. Dux aped the premise behind Enter the Dragon, then claimed it as true. And that relationship led to other things down the road, as you know, but meanwhile my script Firebase was going around. For me, martial arts is just a release. And so he says yeah, sure, give it a shot. Then Jean-Claude came in and worked with Michael on the fight scenes, re-working those. You see it all the time. You see my point? How much of the character's personality is true to the individual who lived those events? What follows is a conversation with Frank Dux, who was the real-life inspiration behind the movie Bloodsport. Over the centuries, however, these . And this felt very personal because the guys that were up on stage for those initial performances were pretty much playing themselves in many respects.Tracers, as the play would later be titled, was first presented as a work-in-progress performance piece on July 4, 1980. I met this guy Sheldon Lettich, who had done a play called Tracers and we became friends. It was also seen by Viacom. And I showed them, here's an issue of Black Belt magazine from two years prior to this; and here's a photo of me in that magazine from January 1976 right after I won it, holding the trophy. So we had no budget on that movie and we did a great job. And then there was the famous meeting between Jean-Claude and Menahem on La Cienega Boulevard. Like I'm a kook because he comes out of a James Bond movie: You Only Live Twice. One of these covert operatives was one Frank Dux. We needed at least $20 million to do this thing right and it looked like it might happen, but it didn't. He kept saying, "Jean-Claude is poison!" Qissi followed Van Damme to Los Angeles and found himself in a bit part in Bloodsport and eventually played the villain, Tong Po, in Kickboxer. How did you feel afterwards?Frank Dux: It was an enlightening moment. But to my pleasant surprise, Lettich was a complete gentleman. And Jean-Claude's phone began ringing off the hook. 20th Century Fox was high on Only the Strong and we all kind of expected that movie to do better than it did. So flash forward ten years and I still had this notion of doing a film about the classic era of French Foreign Legion movie. I felt bad for him.Blake Harris: Actually, if you don't mind, I have one more question for you.Frank Dux: Sure.Blake Harris: We've spent all of this time talking about your life as a fighter and portrayals of your life as a fighter. And I actually helped John do the casting. Dux's trophy from the Bahamas event was at least partially made in the San Fernando Valley. Brought his wife with him and we just hit it off, right from the getgo. It made its budget back just the first weekend on the west coast. Occasionally he'd come by the studio. There were a number of people who really liked it. Took me a long, long time to write that script. How much of the story really happened? This thingwhatever it was calledit was really cool and it would be a cool way to meet chicks.Blake Harris: And how did you go from passively enjoying these things to actual participating and learning how to fight?Frank Dux: I guess one of the things that helped push me in that direction was that I befriended a kid named Grant who had it far worse than myself. What was all this camaraderie about? Why you think you were so skilled for movies and we just hit it off, from., but everyone 's told me it was going around pretty much what Double Impact isBlake Harris: was.
