We can calculate the distance of the hole center from the open end using the same formula I've shown in previous step (see first image). As I mentioned before, the speed of sound depends on a lot of factors, like altitude, temperature, composition of air, and so on. Take one tube. I used a tuner to check the pitch of this test pipe and that gave me an idea of where to start. The length of the tube influence the pitch: longer tubes produce lower notes, shorter tubes produce higher notes. First I had to figure out the unit / time for speed of sound which I derived to be 13830 inches / second then worked the formula 13830 / 4 * f, 13830 / 4 * 466.2 . amzn_assoc_title = "More Fun Stuff"; You can even give your song a name. So we can "stole" their results to serve our scopes. Musical craft ideas can be a great learning activity for kids. those without accidentals (low C, D, E, F, G, A, B, high C) and set them in order from longer to shorter. From our 10 pipe pentatonic FunPipes to the 22 Pipe Grand Tenor and deluxe special orders. I wonder what physics stand by this bending technique. Putting a quality Pan Flute together is a lot like putting together a jigsaw puzzle you always want to be able to reach for, and find, a piece that is just the right size and shape to fit. This requires having a good supply of bamboo pipes, of all assorted sizes and bore diameters, ranging from the very largest that you will be using, right down to the very narrowest, and every conceivable size and diameter in between. You definitely dont want to come up short, so its always better to have a supply of bamboo in excess of your needs than to be wanting in any way, or having to make do with a pipe that really isnt everything that youre looking for. Besides having a wide selection of pipes of every possible diameter available, the basic qualities desired in a bamboo pipe for making Pan Flutes are straightness, roundness or cylindricality, and hardness and denseness. A bamboo pipe doesnt have to be perfectly straight in fact, few are but it cannot be too crooked; slight bowing is permissible, with adjacent pipes selected to be congruent in the direction of their bowing. They were perfect for younger children to make and use, and the kids got lots of fine motor practice decorating their pan flutes with yarn. Don't stand in one place, move around constantly to get more mileage out of the jingle dress. We need to make the pan flute in tune and well constructed. Intro How to make a PAN FLUTE! Also on a side-note, I found an online free tuner for flutes and similar woodwinds, also works great for fine-tuning panpipes ;) Link is: http://www.flutetunes.com/tuner/, Seems I ran into a snag of some sort when calculating the pipe lengths, I'll work the formula step-by-step for the pipe above the A @ 440, hopefully you can spot my screw-up. Here is the process that will bring us to an almost perfectly tuned pan pipes. If you cannot print a life-size plan or you don't have a caliber with a tolerance of 0.01 (and big enough to measure 32 cm), you can round to the first decimal digit, but make sure to round properly (for example, 31.69 will become 31.7, 29.91 will become 29.9. If you hear 2 notes when you play the C, D or E tube, then lower the 2-tubes group. This is due to harmonics produced by the section behind the hole. amzn_assoc_asins = "B0771KXDLH,B00II02KM0,B00000IS02,B073R2FBWY,B00005RF5C,B00DQRV6B6,B00K89KG66,B0002F5CQK,B015EV2NZE"; Filed Under: Crafts for Kids, Elementary, Science, Sound Tagged With: homemade instruments, sound, straws, Welcome to Buggy and Buddy! Blow air into the pan flute. No math, no strange formulas Now we need to find a precise relation between tube length and note pitch. Treat Injuries Immediately 1. this pan flute kit from Discount School Supply, 28 Days of STEM and STEAM Activities for Kids series, 15 Meaningful Earth Day Activities for Kids, STEM for Kids: Straw Rockets (with Free Rocket Template), Earth Day Craft for Kids: Cupcake Liner Daisy, Science for Kids: Dissect a Bean Seed (with free printable recording sheet). Again, the answer came from physics. Start with the longest tube at 17.5 cm and the shortest at 8.5 cm. OK, then. Simply blow air through the straws and discover what melodies can be created! Take five wide straws and cut them into varying lengths. Place the longest straw on the tape first, near the left edge. You'll also need a general purpose hand-held sander, masking tape, a saw, a ruler or measuring tape, and a box cutter or sharp knife. Besides providing a smooth, contiguous surface between the pipe rims that the players lips can easily glide over, slatting also fulfills the function of rendering the final instrument more narrow and compact. Stated simply, the deeper the slats are cut, the more the instruments resulting total span will be compressed, whereas the shallower the slats are cut, the wider that final span will be. Although there should be a relatively consistent and uniform slatting pattern throughout the instruments entire gamut or span, within this overall principle there can be different policies and protocols when it comes to relative slatting depth. The two main slatting strategies that are used are graduated slatting versus uniform slatting. In graduated slatting, the five lowest pipes are slatted the most deeply, with the slatting depth gradually decreasing in the pipes above that until, in the top octave, the slats are relatively quite shallow. Graduated slatting is most appropriate for small, high pitched Pan Flutes like the Alto Pan Flute. Uniform slatting means that you cut the slats to a relatively uniform depth throughout the entire range or span of the instrument, from top to bottom. Uniform slatting works best for the larger and lower pitched Pan Flutes, like the Tenor and Bass Pan Flutes.. You can use it "as is", or you can change the speed of sound to a value you think it's more appropriate for you. After assembly, if any holes or gaps between the pipes should remain, these can be filled in with glue in a kind of second gluing, but the better you fit the pipes, the less of this has to be done. In my case the first C is a C4 and the last C is a C5. If you can spot my error, please clue me in :). We use cookies to ensure that we give you the best experience on our website. on Introduction, Hiam working on a similar project for school where i will be needing the varying length for the notes Is it possible to get some help from youMy tubes have a diameter of 10mmI am having difficulties to get the lengths for the notesThanksDevesh, Greetings :) I've been wanting to make a set of panpipes for ages, but had no clue where to begin. #2 Use the wavelength and diameter and solve for the length of each straw wind column ( L ). This is the perfect activity to accompany a lesson on the science of sound, our five senses, or music. So I would had to bend it very much to do it. Only a really good ear can sense a difference of a few cents. Now you should have three partial pan flutes: one with 8 tubes, one with 2 tubes and one with 3 tubes. Take the thing you want to use to close the end and close the end. Try using straws of varying widths. A short straw produces a high note. amzn_assoc_linkid = "f509cefcf70eb555d1cc88fa3970b334"; Youll want one end of the straw hanging about 3/4 inch over the side. Finish by covering the lolly stick with ribbon or washi tape, to decorate. Encourage children to measure and cut their own straws. When building a set of pan pipes, leave an extra bit of material more than what is indicated here. amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "buggyandbuddy-20"; This is the first EVER tutorial on making a Pan Flute by Blue Bear Flutes! So we'll drill only one hole. Step One: Buying and Selecting the Bamboo I know you've already provided the end result, but I need to know how to get there because this is for a school project. Im going to suspend them to trees and have wind blow through or into them, creating a haunting sound. I'm here for this! 1. also remember to look at the most recently cut straw so that you know where to cut (it does not need to be perfect.) I have two questions. How we can do that? Place the double-sided tape onto the other black strip of cardstock and place it on top of your straws, lining it up with the first piece of cardstock. As you blow across the straw, the air in the straw vibrates. The Pan Flute is a hand crafted musical instrument, and one that will test the craftsmanship and carpentry skills of even the finest artisan. The Pan Flute is also a perfect fusion of Nature and Art, in which the artisan works with natural materials, usually bamboo, and precision crafts them into a fine musical instrument. And so, making a Pan Flute is usually a very labor intensive process, and one that can test the patience and perseverance of the flute builder. That is why I have, in tongue-in-cheek fashion, called Pan Flute making a twelve step process. The other reason is that I have broken down the whole process of Pan Flute making into twelve discreet steps, as follows:. By bending the pipes, you are exploiting the slightly elastic nature of the material (be careful not to stretch too much and cause the resultant tension to shatter a brittle pipe! My local store sells only 1 or 2 m long tubes, and with 3 short (1 m) tubes you can do every pipe. ), I keep getting very small results, like .15 for C4, and I think i'm missing something but I can't tell what. So the disposition I chose is similar to that of key on a keyboard, but the accidentals (black keys) are nearest to the player and have been lowered. So, the best thing (maybe it's only a dream) is a mechanism that open both ends and holes with a single lever, and only the ends with another lever. So thats it a basic run-down of the twelve step process for making a Pan Flute. May it serve you well! However, "my" frequencies are 261.6, 277.2, 293.7, 311.1, 329.6, 349.2, 370, 392, 415.3, 440, 466.2, 493.9, 523.3 rounded to first decimal digit, measured in hertz. In this STEM activity, kids will make their very own pan flutes using straws. Make These Super Easy Pen Pan Flutes for a great lesson about musical instruments. They also have the opportunity to write and record their own music. Regarding the formula, you can just click on it and it will open full-size. 1 pair of scissors 1 ruler 1 roll of tape The Panflute is a craftable Pre-Hardmode Bard weapon. The external diameter of those pipes is 2 cm, maybe too wide (and bigger than the one I've realized). This straw pan flute is so easy to make that kids can make it all on their own! In order to have the right acoustical proportions and response, the narrowest part of a pipes bore needs to be its upper rim, with every part of the bore below it being at least that width, if not slightly wider but never narrower. If the middle or lower parts of a pipes bore should be narrower than the bore diameter at its top end, the pipes tone will sound false or glassy, and there will be instability of pitch and/or tone quality. And the octave-and-a-fifth produced by overblowing a pipe will fall flat of the true fifth. Although most species of bamboo produce pipes whose bores are narrowest at their top end or perfectly cylindrical, some species of bamboo, most notoriously Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) will often be narrower at their bottom ends in their natural state. If this should be the case, the bore needs to be widened at the pipes bottom end with a rat tailed file, and the bore delicately engineered to produce a perfectly cylindrical camber or one that is slightly wider at the bottom end. Doing this straightly and precisely is easier said than done, and takes a lot of painstaking precision. It is a good idea to precision measure the pipe bores at their top and bottom ends with calipers., Step Seven: Slatting and Fitting the Pipes Take five wide straws and cut them into varying lengths. Once your body is positioned correctly, you are ready to play the flute. The semitones could be made by bending the panpipes for about 60 degrees - this makes note sound a semitone lower than normal, so you don't need tube for each tone - 22 tubes is enough :). Make minor adjustments to your embouchure and the flute's positioning so that you achieve the sound you want. Knot the end when you are done. Ti = 9 cm Please check this carefully and don't wear your pipes since although this is a cool representation of wave physics, I don't want you ruining your panflute :). After the pipes have been oiled, and the excess oil has been thoroughly removed, the next step is to finish or paint the pipes. The purpose of painting or finishing the pipes is mainly aesthetic in nature, but it can have acoustical benefits as well. A wide variety of different finishes may be used, such as acrylic lacquer, oil finishes, polyurethane, or various kinds of varnishes, including acoustical violin varnish. I highly recommend the latter, as it not only beautifies and preserves the bamboo, but also improves the overall sound and acoustics of the pipes. Or, you may simply wax or oil the outsides of the pipes, as you have done with their interiors, or apply no paint or finish at all, preferring to go natural. A glossy finish is most recommended for the bottom frame or boot of the Pan Flute, even if the pipes themselves are left in an unfinished, natural state; one of the things I have done with the frame or boot has been to apply a very thin layer of clear epoxy glue to it, using a very thin piece of plywood as a kind of palette knife applicator for doing this. The frame or boot may also be stained to get it to be the right color, and even brown or black shoe polish can be used for this purpose. If you have good basic woodworking and craftsmanship skills, you will be able to come up with a good creative and aesthetically pleasing solution. Take the 8-tubes and the 2-tubes pan flutes and lye the latter on the first (see first image), lowering the accidentals by 1-2 cm. Teaching students about . Step-by-Step Instructions Step one Step One Saw off a length of bamboo about 6 to 8 inches long. The pan flute have a problem: each tube can produce a single note, so if you want a full 3 octave flute you have to make 36 different tubes. Making these super easy pen pan flutes is perfect for any lesson about music or instruments. (We cut ours into the following lengths: 6 inches, 5.5 inches, 5 inches, 4 inches, and 3.5 inches.) The next one I will make will be a D-whistle, the traditional Irish tuning for this instrument. Question Step 1: Materials/Setup Here are the things you'll need to make your pan flute: Approx. The (not-so-)boring part. Step Eight: Pipe Assembly Wait, don't take your driller too soon. Now we need to determine which notes we want to produce, and their frequencies. I like really zillions of things, very different one another. The process of fitting the slats so that the pipes interface well with each other is one that can be done in either a quick and perfunctory fashion, or in a more precise fashion whatever level of painstaking precision, or relative lack thereof, you choose to select, there needs to be a relatively high level of consistency and uniformity in the slatting depths of the pipes from top to bottom. You shouldnt have one pair of interfacing slats be cut very deeply with the ones immediately above or below it being cut very shallowly, for example. The slatting depth between pipes, which is measured by the closest that the inner bores of adjacent pipes come to each other at their narrowest point, is merely one dimension of pipe slatting and fitting. The slats need to be angled inwards ever so slightly towards the players side so that the surfaces of adjoining slats fit together perfectly on the Pan Flute Mold. Also, when viewed from the tops to the bottoms of adjacent pipes, the pipes and their slats need to be fairly uniform in width from top to bottom. Twisting or skewing of the slats from top to bottom should also be eliminated. Pretty simple, uh? All we need to do is take the frequency of the pipe, double it two times and calculate the value of L. For example, the D4 has a frequency of 293.7 Hz, so the D6 has a frequency of 1174.7 Hz. My son (just turned 6) has been very keen on making homemade books recently. Dual wield the flute and the rattle to use both at the same time. Keep practicing and learn to play a song with . A few words concerning the proper degree of arch or curvature of the pipes are in order here. In my experience, I have found that a curve that is congruent and consistent with that of a circle whose radius is 12 to 13 inches (30 to 33 cm.) Step 2: Tracing In this STEM / STEAM activity, kids will make a homemade pan flute using straws! Simple: creating an hole in the tubes. As with slatting the pipes before assembly, the key to a successful beveling of the pipes lies in consistency and uniformity. There shouldnt be any significant differences in beveling angle and depth from one pipe to the next, or between adjacent pipes all should be smooth, regular and even. If the pipe beveling should be irregular or uneven, the player will have to adjust his or her embouchure and blowing angle or technique from one pipe to the next, which doesnt make for very efficient and smooth playing. With smooth, uniform beveling of the pipes, all the pipes of an instrument will speak in sync with one voice. If we were to draw an analogy between the Pan Flute and the guitar, the beveling of the pipe rims is analogous to the fine adjustment of the height of the strings above the frets in a guitar both are crucial to determining a smooth, uniform playing action and response, whether it be with your fingers over the strings of a guitar, or with your lips and breath over the bamboo rims of the pipes of a Pan Flute. In beveling the pipe rims, I recommend that you proceed gradually, in stages, beveling and tweaking the pipes until you hit that sweet spot of perfect tone and playing response. This post is part of the 28 Days of STEM and STEAM Activities for Kids series. Make a pan flute with both ends of the straws open and one pan flute where the straws all have one sealed end. The general rule is: if the discarded part starts with a digit less than 5 then you left all unchanged; if it starts with a digit greater or equal than 5, then add 1 to the last digit of the remaining part). 2 Scour for bamboo. The caliber will allow you to make more precise measurements, but you can use a measuring tape with a sign every millimeter without loosing too much tuning. Luckily, some physician (well, actually a lot of physician) already studied this matter creating and developing a branch of physics called acoustic. Number each straw 1-5 with a black Sharpie. For my after school kindergarten enrichment class, we used this pan flute kit from Discount School Supply. First we find the frequencies of all notes we choose. Ill mention various options you can use in each step below. This can be done easily with Excel, Derive, Mathematica, even with Windows' Calc. We placed them on the tape in this order to better space them out equally, but it might be easier for younger kids to just put them on the tape from longest to shortest and not really worry about spacing. We can see this fact from two formulas in the first image. Art:The pan flutes can be decorated to express your childs creativity! Hi again, i've re read some of the comments below and apparently the speed of sound needs to be in centimetres per second! It is commonly known in folk music but originates from South America, where ancient Amazonic tribes made the instrument from bamboo to provide melodies to their traditional tribal songs. They must have a medium thickness and constant diameter throughout the wall. In Romanian Pan Flute makers parlance, the whole process of beveling the upper rims of the pipes is often referred to as putting a buza or mouth on the pipes. The whole purpose of beveling the upper rims of the pipes is to give the pipes a mouth that interfaces more comfortably and intimately with the mouth and lips of the player. The benefits of beveling the pipe rims are: a more polished, refined sound and tone; a better and more sensitive playing response; and an easier and clearer playing of the chromatic notes, which are produced by lipping down on the pipes. Beveling also smoothes things out; just try moving your lips back and forth over the rough, sharp rims of the un-beveled pipes! Beveling the upper rims of the pipes is a highly individual matter, and each player has his or her own preference; therefore, pipe beveling styles can vary widely between different players. Because beveling the pipe rims is putting a mouth on the pipes to fit the players own mouth or embouchure, the basic guideline or recommendation here is that beginning players bevel the top rims of the pipes only very lightly; then, once their embouchure is stronger and more firmly set, they can progress to a deeper or more extensive beveling of the pipe rims, as their natural inclinations lead them. . You will need that extra for tuning the flute later on. Step Nine: Framing or Reinforcing the Pipe Bottoms When the kids have finished making their straw pan flutes, they can use them to explore sound and make music. keep in mind that high notes are easier to play and the longer the straw the lower the note. I choose to use light cardboard. For example, a closed tube that produce an A4 (440 Hz) is 18.84 cm long. Make an easy straw pan flute using a few drinking straws and tape. The numbers should, Before I forget it, here's the link to the awsome. Step Two: Rough Cutting the Pipes Probably the difference is due to the fact that the speed you used is slightly different from the one I used. I used aluminum instead of copper because it was easier to find the diameter I needed, plus it's lighter than copper so the flute will be lighter too. So take the C#/Db and D#/Eb tubes, and follow the same process as before. KSU iTeach 670 subscribers Subscribe 19K views 2 years ago Learn about vibration and pitch by creating a PAN FLUTE! Step Twelve: Oiling and Finishing the Pipes The initial sealing off of the bottom of a pipe so that no air can escape, and so the pipe may produce a clear sound when it is blown into can happen as early as the ninth step, which is that of framing the pipes. This can happen when epoxy and fiberglass are laid onto the bottom of the instrument, or even when the bottom panel of the wooden frame is affixed and glued on or it may not happen. The sealing off of the bottom of a pipe may be achieved via the traditional method of using beeswax, or it can be achieved via another method. Professor Georgescu would whittle off pine plugs or stoppers until they fit snugly into the bottom of the pipe, then he would take a ball of beeswax and drop it down into the bottom of the pipe, inserting a hot poker down into the pipe after it to melt the beeswax, which would then flow into the cracks and crevices between the pine wood plug and the pipe walls, sealing off the pipe. He did this with the individual pipes, even before assembly. The easiest way is simply to wait until after the bottom frame has been put on the pipes and seal them by packing in beeswax or another tuning material, like epoxy putty or some other form of putty., The next phase of the tuning process is rough tuning. In the bottom octave of an Alto Pan Flute, putty is inserted into the pipe bottoms until the pitch is about a quarter tone below the desired pitch in the lowest octave; in the middle octave, it is inserted until about a half step below the desired pitch; and in the top octave, it is until a whole step below the desired pitch. Epoxy putty remains stable and does not expand after it is set, but some expansion may occur during the setting process, which may be problematic; for this reason, some other form of putty may be desired. Also, epoxy putty that sets and hardens too quickly is to be avoided get at least 15, preferably 30 minutes of drying time, and mix your putty and use it in small batches. The fine tuning up to pitch should be done with beeswax, because it is malleable and adjustable, so more can easily be inserted to raise the pitch, and wax can also be taken out to lower the pitch. A tuning tool can be made from a wooden dowel stick that is small enough in diameter to fit into the pipe easily and comfortably. One end of the dowel stick should be left flat for packing down the wax after it has been dropped down into the bottom of the pipe; the other end has a groove filed into it with a rat-tailed file. If you have inserted too much wax and need to remove some, jam the grooved end of the dowel stick into the wax and twist it around; then pull it out. Usually, some wax will have stuck into the groove, which can then be removed.. What could you use? I've brought aluminium pipes (light and good-looking), but they have a paint I don't like. Blow a steady, strong stream of air through your embouchure into one of the pan flute's tubes. Math:Kids will need to measure and compare lengths in order to create their straw pan flute. If you have both at home, your kids could make a pan flute out of each. ), When we do this, the elastic properties cause a slight elongation. 2. . This way you can have a pan flute whose range is, for example, C4-C7, three octaves! Materials we need: - about 3 m of metal or plastic pipe (if you use metal try to avoid copper) - duct tape of any kind - strings/shoelaces/yarn/whatever you want to keep tubes together - 13 pieces of whatever you can use to close one and of a pipe (coins, metal or plastic scrap, wood, cardboard remember that it will cover the end from outside, and cannot be inserted like a cork on a bottle because this will shorten the air column and change the note produced). at the top end of the instrument - and a precisely adjusted wall thickness calibration from top to bottom. In addition to the pipe bore diameters being precisely calibrated, the pipe wall thicknesses should be as well, so that the outer diameter of the pipe above at its top rim should be ever so slightly narrower than that of its lower neighbor and so on up the scale, until you get to the very small pipes up at the top end of the instrument. The disposition of tubes, in my opinion, is not so good, because of my lack of memory. This is such a simple science activity, yet it teaches kids so much! If you like the finiture of your tubes you can skip this step. So what you are actually hearing is the air inside of the straw, not the flute itself. That's all, folks! I used to play pan flutes. First, the single slat of the bottom pipe receives a layer of glue as it is placed onto the end of the Pan Flute Mold, with the right tilt to it. Then, the second pipe up from the bottom is firmly placed next to it, and, after placement, its uppermost slat receives a layer of glue, with the third pipe up placed firmly on the mold adjoining it. This process repeats on up the scale, until you get to the top pipe, which receives no glue of its own, but is merely adjoined to the glued upper slat of the pipe below it. The coat of glue that the uppermost slat of each pipe receives is to be moderate not too thick, and not too thin, for the best results. My preferred method of applying the glue is the old fashioned way with the fingers although you are free to try other methods of glue application. It is also pretty much essential that all the pipes be glued together in one sitting, because there is bound to be at least a little warping of pipes as the glue dries, and gluing all the pipes together in one sitting, within the space of a half an hour or so, assures that a consistent, uniform warping will occur throughout the instruments entire span. The possibility of excess or undue warping can be reduced or eliminated by a thorough and precise fitting of the slats of all adjoining pipes before assembly, so that all slat surfaces are thoroughly flush and flat to one another. Let the glue dry for at least 12 hours before proceeding further. Later on # 2 use the wavelength and diameter and solve for the length of the true fifth here...
