I upgraded all to McHenry truck mounted couplers, 36" or 38" Intermountain wheelsets (after removing car brake shoes), and, when necessary, extra weight using glued birdshot in nooks and crannies of model floors. PRR had so much stuffthere may be some hope there. The assembled structure measures 5. While I've never bought one new, I have quite a few bought off the "used" table at a now long-gone hobbyshop.I think that the detail is decent, although the wheels are undersize, and have flanges which are deeper than most HO scale wheels. The roofs may, or may not, have been either black, 'pullman green', or 'dark green truck enamel'. Many railroads used these cars or similar ones from the 1900's well into the diesel era. I discovered they they meant 18, not 17 3/4, when I checked one flex-track curve. While I have deep-sixed most of the remaining Rivarossi in exchange for Walthers, Rapido, and BLI, I still have a few cars. I actually like the Roundhouse cars but as you reference, they are late 1800s, early 1900s. This is Rivarossi's postal/express baggage car, altered a bit to better ressemble a CNR prototype. I would liketo know more about them too. Product Notes: 1. When installed on IHC and Rivarossi passenger cars, these diaphragms will fill that 'non-scale' space between passenger cars without affecting their 18" turning radius. The car floors were predrilled with holes for wiring the car for electrical pickup from the trucks for lighting, but the wheels were plastic. While the models' detailing may match nobody's actual car, the 60 foot length certainly does - for instance, the floor plan I'm looking at right now for L&N "Mail cars 1106 to 1112 including 1114". I was lucky enough to obtain a couple of sets of Rivarossi passenger cars from there last year of production. Did you back 'em up too? Guess I'll stick with the Rivarossi's. I've been doing some reading and have learned that most people replace the wheels and or trucks. with that kind of power, any wheels that do not want to roll will just slide along although none do. All have updated tooling and features knuckle couplers and factory installed grab irons . i put a few ounces of lead type slugs inside the cars for extra weight. . For that, I cast some suitably-sized lead blocks, then put some in the washrooms at each end of the cars (most of my Rivarossi cars came with no interiors), and a bunch more in the clerestories, making each of them 15oz. As mentioned earlier, these were produced by American manufacturer Athearn and remained in the catalog until 1963. I've riden on similar ex-Rock Island commuter cars in the last few years at the Osceola and St.Croix RR, part of the Minnesota Transportation Museum's scenic train line. They are generic designs and not specific to any the prototype. Well, that's another story. I'm glad its a steam that I am getting. The coupler box "swing arm" is well supported too, which will avoid coupler droop. Jeffers, thanks very much for the details on the MDC/Roundhouse cars. Unless you can nail it down to ONE car on ONE day you'll go NUTS tying to create 'generic' colors like 'pullman green' that work for all railroads in all eras and circumstances. When I was buying them in the 1980s, interiors were optional, iirc. Their passenger cars are decent though. Can anyone comment about Rivarossi passenger cars? It did require shaving away some of the cast on brake shoes but with care you can shave away enough to retain the "look" of the shoes yet let the wheels turn freely. There is a newer set of 4 cars that are 60' long. As I understand it, the new Rivarossi company owned by Hornby has the old Rivarossi molds so I think there is a good chance the entire line might get reintroduced.
